Your attic needs to be able to reduce moisture. If the insulation you currently have is antiquated, you may consider redoing the insulation with one of a better R value. The R value just tells you how good it is at insulating.

Lastly, old appliances are serious energy hogs. If you are planning on replacing them soon, you should consider energy saving versions. Get the one you want with the most energy efficiency. Refrigerators, washers and dryers, furnaces, air conditioners, and water heaters are all good candidates.
